Jacintho,A. O.; Catani,R. A.; Pellegrino,D..

A conspectus of the families of Aphyllophorales Naturalis
Donk, M.A..
The author gives a recapitulation of the families of the Aphyllophorales. He is inclined to recognize 21: the families he is not (yet) prepared to uphold are discussed. The synonymy of the order and the families above the rank of genus is listed, but it is avowedly incomplete. The treatment of each family does not go further than the mention of the included genera, but through selected references cited for each genus in a special list, an introduction to the separate genera is provided. An introductory chapter contains some general remarks and discusses a number of terms used in connection with the treatment of the families. New taxa are, Brachybasidiales, Hericiaceae, Punctulariaceae, Asterostromatoideae, Pteruloideae, while the name Septobasidiales Couch...

A contribution to the investigation of the Holocene history of the beech in the eastern Netherlands Naturalis
Daniels, A.G.H..
To study the immigration and spreading of the beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in the Netherlands during the young Holocene, three peat bogs were palynologically investigated in the eastern Netherlands and in the adjacent German area. For this purpose peat samples have been collected in the Korenburgerveen near Winterswijk, in a peat bog near Burlo (Germany) and in the Aamsveen south-east of Enschede. The analysis of the peat-samples proved, that extensive beech-forests existed in subatlantic times in the subcentreuropean flora district of the Netherlands. This is shown in the comparatively high Fagus-percentages in the pollendiagrams.

A description and discussion of threat- and anxiety-behaviour of Burhinus capensis (Lichtenstein) during incubation Naturalis
Broekhuysen, G.J..
Dedicated to Professor H. Boschma on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. INTRODUCTION The family Burhinidae or Stone Curlews, consists of large ploverlike birds which have no hind toe, long yellow legs with thickened tibiotarsal joints, hence the sometimes used popular name of "thickknee". The head is relatively big and very round and the eye is yellow, large and very striking. The bill is short and stout. The plumage is very cryptic when the bird is at rest, but in flight or in postures with wings raised a rather striking contrasty pattern becomes visible in the wing. All members of this family are nocturnal in their habits and during the day time they often squat on the ground among rocks and vegetation and are then difficult to spot unless they...

A maturação do abacaxi Anais da ESALQ
Montenegro,Heitor W. S..
In the present work it was sougth to correlate the coloration of the fruit of Ananas comosus variety Perola with the pulp quality, aiming at the orientation of the fruit grower to the correct time of harvest. Pineapple fruit was chosen in 5 stages of maturation recognized by its external characteristics, principally its color. The fruits of each stage of maturation were analysed, determining the. weight, the percentage of soluble solids, and relation of acid to soluble solids. At the same time a test was made classifying the fruits as acid, regular, good, excellent, and spoiled. A correlation was found between the external coloration of the fruit and the degree of maturation. Concluding from this that the best time to harvest the variety Perola is in the...

A new Dragon Fly of the genus Rhodopygia Naturalis
Belle, J..
In the course of my researches in Surinam a species of Rhodopygia was often collected, the specimens of which answered fairly closely to Dr. F. RIS’s description of Rhodopygia hollandi in the Libellulinae of the DE SELYS collection. However, after studying PH. P. CALVERT’s original description of the species in the Biologia Centrali-Americana (1911, Odonata, p. 318—319, tab. 9, fig. 54) I found my species to be manifestly different in kind from Rhodopygia hollandi, and hence the determination with the aid of RIS’s Libellulinae was incorrect.

A new fish of the family Scorpaenidae from New Guinea Naturalis
Mees, G.F..
The ichthyological collections brought together in various parts of New Guinea by staff members of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in 1954 and 1955 (cf. Boeseman, 1963), contain a series of scorpion-fishes which are here described as a new species, representing a new genus. Cheroscorpaena genus novum Mainly characterized by the, in the Scorpaenidae unique, pectoral fins, which consist of nine rays connected by a membrane, followed ventrally by three entirely detached simple rays of about the same length as the main fins. The type and hitherto only species of this genus is: Cheroscorpaena tridactyla species nova (pl. 1) D XIII. 7 or 8, A III. 6 or 7, Ρ i. 8-i-i-i, V I. 5, C 8 to 10 (branched rays only), gill-rakers on outer branchial arch 7 or 8 +...

A new Hexagonia (Coleoptera, Carabidae) from Sumatra Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
When arranging a part of the Carabidae collection of the Leiden Museum, I noted that the specimens labelled Hexagonia lucassenii Van de Poll (1889: 249-250) did not constitute a homogeneous material. The material consisted of the original series of Hexagonia lucassenii from Java (Kamanglen, Tegal), and twelve specimens from Sumatra, viz., five specimens from Pagar Alam, four from Nirou(?), and three from Palembang. The Sumatran specimens were collected by J. Bouchard. The three specimens from Palembang were mounted on one pin, and bear a label (not distinctly legible) "konneri n.sp."; I presume this to be merely a museum name, probably given by Oberthür. I compared the specimens from Sumatra with the descriptions of Hexagonia-species known to occur in...

A new peritrichous Ciliate as a symphoriont on a Tardigrade Naturalis
Land, J. van der.
INTRODUCTION On 24 September 1962 a number of Tardigrada was obtained from a sample of lichens from the French Alps. The lichens had been collected Figs. 1, 2. Pyxidium tardigradum n. sp. on Hypsibius oberhaeuseri (Doy.). on 27 June 1961 from a rock in the department Haute Savoie and had been preserved in a dry condition for nearly fifteen months. After washing, living specimens of three different species of Tardigrada (Hypsibius oberhaeuseri (Doyère), Macrobiotus hufelandii Schultze and Echiniscus spec. were found, together with some eggs of Hypsibius oberhaeuseri and Macrobiotus hufelandii, a small number of Rotatoria and some dead Oribatid Acari. About twenty Protozoa appeared to be attached to one of the specimens of Hypsibius oberhaeuseri (fig. 1). It...

A new Phyllophora (Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae, Phyllophorinae) from New Guinea Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
Only part of the very extensive entomological collections made in New Guinea during various expeditions by Dutch scientists has so far been studied, but this already yielded many new species. A first superficial survey of the Orthoptera in these collections provided a number of specimens of a species of Phyllophora, which proved distinct from any of the forms described before. As I believe the species to be new to science, it is described here as Phyllophora boschmai nov. spec., and named in honour of Professor Dr. H. Boschma, who for many years was my teacher and director at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, and to whom I owe many thanks for his practical advices during my studies. The greater part of the specimens mentioned here have been...

A new species of Nevskyella Ossiannilsson, 1954 (Homoptera, Aphididae) Naturalis
Hille Ris Lambers, D.; Bosch, R. van den.
INTRODUCTION Hitherto only one species of Nevskyella Ossiannilsson, 1954, was known, viz., the type, Nevskya fungifera Ossiannilsson, 1953. This has only been found near Uppsala, Sweden on Carex caryophyllea Latour ( = C. verna Chaix = C. praecox Jacq.). A very similar species found in three departments of southern France is described hereafter. Nevskyella meridionalis nov. spec. Apterous viviparous female. Morphological characters. — Body about 1.35 to 1.80 mm long, elongated oval, often quite slender, not depressed. Pigmentation of body very nearly like that figured by Ossiannilsson (1935, p. 235, fig. 1) for the type species, but usually the meso-metathoracic blotches extended more cephalad and often connected with the blotches of the pronotum; the...

A new species of Pimelodid Catfish from eastern Brazil, Pimelodella boschmai nov. spec. Naturalis
Stigchil, J.W.B. van der.
In 1955, the late Dr. O. Schubart, Director of the Estaçao Esperimental de Biologia at Pirassununga (São Paulo, Brazil) kindly put at my disposal a small collection of fishes which he had assembled in the Mogi-Guassu (river) below the Cachoeira de Emas (Emas falls). Only a series of eight apparently conspecific specimens is discussed here. At first sight, the present specimens appear to closely resemble Pimelodella griffini Eigenmann, especially six examples with a prolonged first soft dorsal ray. However, excepting several minor differences, P. griffini has the dorsal spine prolonged instead of the first ray, while it has the adipose dorsal fin much shorter. Having only two specimens of P. griffini, moreover of dubious identity, available for comparison,...
